Background

First Steps was established in 1991 in a large detached house set back from the main road with ample parking. The owners, Heather Norris and Penny Sealey, wanted to provide good quality childcare and learning for their own children and are now providing this care for many others.

It is not just one ‘thing’ that makes us unique, in fact a combination of many ‘things’ have given us an exceptional local reputation as an outstanding nursery. Our facilities alone are great, however when you combine these with our dedicated management team who have worked together at the nursery for over 20 years, our experienced and enthusiastic practitioners, the extensive range of resources, freshly cooked meals prepared on-site and wonderful outside spaces we offer an excellent environment for your child.

Information

The nursery has a large enclosed rear garden, with lawn, soft wooded play area, as well as decked and paved areas with a play house. The nursery is open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) for 50 weeks of the year.

We offer morning, afternoon or all day sessions enabling us to accommodate parents needs wherever possible, and take children from 3 months to school age.

Food

We provide a mid-morning snack and drink two course home cooked lunch and a light afternoon tea. Special dietary needs can be catered for and children are offered drinking water throughout the day.

The Nursery

The nursery is housed on two floors, with older children on the ground floor so as to be able to access the garden throughout the day. The younger children occupy the spacious playrooms on the first floor. Our have the ‘Sunshine Room‘ for our babies. It is a light, bright room with separate sleep room and nappy changing facilities.

As toddlers they follow through into the ‘Rainbow Room.’ Here the children gain skills and confidence through fun activities and play. We also tackle potty training and are happy to offer advice to parents on this and other issues!

The older children occupy the ‘Busy Bee Room‘ on the ground floor, where they are able to play in the role play, construction and art areas. Children have direct access to our garden and spend a great deal of time outside.

Joining the Nursery

Before your child joins our nursery we like to spend time with you and your child, discussing your child’s needs, routines etc, making the transition as comfortable as possible.

We encourage all parents to participate nursery life and you are welcome at any time.

We aim to show consideration to the children as individuals, irrespective of race, gender or special needs, allowing them to develop independence and social skills at their own pace with the care and supports of staff who respect them.
