It started at home
First Steps was founded in 1991 in a spacious, detached house, tucked away on Hendford Hill in Yeovil. Heather Norris created it to provide high-quality childcare and early learning for their own children. Today, that same commitment continues for the many families in our community.
We respect our children as individuals, irrespective of race, gender or special needs, allowing them to develop independence and social skills at their own pace, with the care and support of our highly qualified team.

There isn’t just one thing that makes us exceptional, but rather the combination of many:

- An extensive, ever-evolving range of resources for every age and interest
- Fresh and healthy, home-cooked meals that are prepared daily on site
- A range of outdoor spaces, designed to give the children freedom to play, explore nature and grow food
Our rooms
Sunshine Room (for babies)
A calm, bright and airy haven with its own sleep area and changing facilities – perfect for our youngest explorers.
Rainbow Room (for toddlers)
A world of colour and confidence-building play. We guide little ones through new skills (including potty training) and partner with parents on every milestone.
Busy Bee Room (for older, pre-school age children)
Role-play corners, construction zones and art studios encourage independence, creativity and social confidence, with direct access to our gardens for outdoor play.
Outdoor adventures
Our enclosed rear garden includes lawns, wooded play areas, decks and paved nooks, complete with a playhouse for climbing, digging, running and discovering.
Mealtimes and nutrition
We believe that good food fuels happy learners. Each day includes:
- Mid-morning snack and drink

- Light afternoon tea
- Constant access to milk and water
We happily accommodate allergies and special dietary needs, ensuring every child enjoys healthy, balanced meals.
